What Are the Risks of Small Steps in a Rapidly Changing World?
02 May 2012, Brussels (13:00 – 14:30), Fondation Madariaga
The specific crisis of the eurozone, in the broader context of the systemic crisis of Western capitalism, and the rise of emerging economies – particularly China – are questioning the role of Europe in the present international political and economic order. Is the European integration project endangered by the difficulty of bringing eurozone governance to a convincing level in terms of efficiency and of democratic legitimacy, and bypolitical divisions that cross the EU27? Is a gradual approach still effective to strengthen European integration? May the Union be overtaken by the return of nationalism?
A Citizen’s Controversy with Luuk Van Middelaar, political philosopher and historian, Member of the Cabinet of Herman Van Rompuy and author of the book Passage à l’Europe, Gallimard, 2012 and Yves Bertoncini, Secretary General of Notre Europe and author of the book Politique européenne : Etats, pouvoirs et citoyens de l’UE, Sciences-Po and Dalloz, 2010.
The debate will be moderated by Pierre Defraigne, Executive Director of the Madariaga - College of Europe Foundation.
On Wednesday 02 May 2012, between 13:00 and 14:30 at the Madariaga-College of Europe Foundation, Avenue de la Joyeuse Entrée 14, B-1040 Brussels (map)
