The Board of Directors of the Jacques Delors Institute, the European think-tank founded in 1996 by the former President of the European Commission and presided by Enrico Letta, Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po and former Prime Minister of Italy, has appointed Mr Sébastien Maillard as Director.
Mr Maillard, 44 years of age, who will assume his duties from 4 September 2017, joins the Institute after a career as a journalist for La Croix. Previously a correspondent for the daily newspaper in Brussels and then in Rome, he reported from across the continent before following the French presidential campaign in 2017. A specialist of European affairs, a subject which he has taught at Sciences Po (Paris) and at Boston College, he is the author of Qu'avons-nous fait de l'Europe ? (What have we done with Europe?, ed. Salvator, 2013 – prefaced by Jacques Delors) and is preparing a new book on Europe with Enrico Letta, which will be published in September.
Enrico Letta stated, “Sébastien Maillard’s appointment, which I strongly endorsed, comes at an exciting time for European policies which are at last enjoying positive momentum after years of crisis. His expertise, dynamism and commitment to the European ideal are key assets required to maintain and develop our role as a proactive stakeholder in strategic thinking on European integration. Theresa May’s electoral failure, Emmanuel Macron’s election, Donald Trump’s positions on the EU and on the USA’s international commitments are all reasons which urge our Institute, under its new Director, to work on an ambitious programme of activities for the autumn with a view to supporting this delicate moment which offers many opportunities for EU integration”.
Enrico Letta also expresses his heartfelt thanks to the outgoing Director, Yves Bertoncini, who has held the position since 2011, “
for the Institute’s major developments under his leadership. His unfailing dedication to his role as Director and his genuine passion for European construction have allowed the Institute to fully assume its commitment to stimulating discussion in these years which have been particularly difficult for the EU and the euro area. I wish him every success for his new consulting activities”.
