European Migration Policy : What strategy(ies) to address the demographic challenge?
4th July 2013
9 am - 10.30 am
European Affairs' Commission room
33 rue Saint Dominique - 75007 Paris
On the occasion of the presentation of its report "Think Global - Act European. Thinking strategically about the EU’s external action", Notre Europe – Jacques Delors Institute organises, together with the EUISS, a debate around the recommendations concerning EU migration policy addressed by the 16 European think tanks contributing to the report.
In spite of the increasingly negative rhetoric surrounding immigration and integration issues, fuelled by the explosion of unemployment in Europe, the shortage of labour force brought about by the demographic ageing of the European population is already beginning to threaten the sustainability of the European social welfare model and highlights the need for a deeper debate concerning what concrete actions can the EU undertake in order to put in place a comprehensive middle to long-term migratory strategy for the EU.
How to reset migration rhetoric in more positive terms so as to combine Member States' need for labour, the EU's security concerns and the development needs of our neighbours?
