Yves Bertoncini in POLITIS "For or Against the Adoption of the European "Fiscal Compact"

on September 27, 2012, 11:18
Interview - Yves Bertoncini

In the perspective of the French ratification of the European "fiscal compact", the Frech Politis asked Yves Bertoncini, Secretary General of Notre Europe, and Francis Wurtz, President of the Unified European Left group at the European Parliament between 1999 and 2009, to debate the issue, comparing viewpoints. Notre Europe proposes an English translation of this debate, published under the title: "Pour ou contre l’adoption du Traité européen".

Conducted by Olivier Doubre and Michel Soudais (with Florent Lacaille-Albiges), the debate was organized around three key questions:

  • 1 - Is the Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union (TSCG) simply a technical adjustment, or does it mark a turning point in the construction of Europe?

  • 2 - Is the adoption of this treaty going to mean additional austerity?

  • 3 - Is a mechanism involving automatic sanctions not counter to democracy?

  • Notre Europe proposes an English translation of this debate, whose French version has been published in Politis on 20 September 2012 under the title: “Pour ou contre l’adoption du Traité européen”.
